Average weight of male 36 kg (80 lbs.) and the female 28 kg (60 lbs.) Shoulder height averages at about 74 cm (29 in). They have a life expectancy of about 10 years.
Identification
The Springbok is a medium size animal with a dark brown stripe on flanks forming a border line between the white belly and the light brown upper body. It has a white face with a dark stripes running from the front corner of the eye to the corners of the mouth. The white of the belly runs about one third up the side of the flanks.
Difference between male and female: Males are bigger and have thicker and longer horns.
Habits
They inhabit the drier areas with enough grass and shrubs to feed on. They used to form large hers consisting of over a 1000. Use to migrate to areas which contain better grazing but fences blocked their migrating routes. They are both browsers and grazers and prefer grass, sprouts and leaves of shrubs. Sufficient moisture is achieved from the food they eat and they can go without water for very long periods. However will drink water when available. There are mixed herds, bachelor herds and female herds. During the time of birth, the mixed herds will split into nursing herds and bachelor herds.
Breeding
A single young is born after a gestation period of +-6 months. The peak of birth normally synchronise with the rainy season. The females will hide the new born that will join the rest of the herd after about 3 weeks. Offspring stays with their mom until the birth of the next young.
