Average weight of male 18 kg (40 lbs.) and the female 20 kg (45 lbs.) Shoulder height averages at about 60 cm (24 in). They have a life expectancy of about 10 years.
Colouration of this species varies quite somewhat. From chestnut in forested areas, to light brown and grey. It has a black stripe on the face running from forehead to the nose.
Difference between male and female: Only males have horns but occasionally you get females with horns as well. Females are bigger in body size.
Prefers woodlands with enough undergrowth, shrubs or tall grass which they feed on and in which they can take shelter. Will also find them in open plains, bordering valleys with cover.Mainly solitary except during the mating season.
They are diurnal but become more nocturnal near human presence. Hides in dense shrubs or tall grass and stay hidden until you almost step on them. They have quite a variety in their diet and will eat insects, frogs, small birds, fruits and even carrion. Independent of water , obtain most of the moisture they need by eating fruits, flowers and tubers. When they run away, they run with their heads down and with characteristic jumping and swerving movements. Good sense of smell and sight.
One, and occasionally two, young gets born at any time during the year after a gestation period of +-3 – 5 months.
