Average weight of the male is 110 kg (242 lbs.) and the female 75 kg (165 lbs.) Shoulder height averages at about 110 cm (44 in). Life expectancy is about 13 years.
Identification
The Nyla is an elegant, slender, spiralled horn antelope that is native to Africa. It has a white chevron between the eyes and white striping down the flanks. Females and juveniles are Rufus brown in colour while the males grow into a dark brown to grey colour. The males have a white dorsal crest of hair running from the shoulder to the base of the tail. Males also have a hairline running along the middle of the chest and belly, ends up covering the middle section of the rear legs. Yellow-brown socks are also very distinctive.
Difference between male and female: Only males have horns, are much bigger and dark in colour with the female wearing a rufus-brown coat.
Habits
They are both browsers and grazes with a diet that includes leaves, branches, fruit, grass and flowers. They inhabit dense woodland and thickets and riverine forests. They are relatively shy animals and will never wonder far from shelter. Need sufficient water sources. Feeds during the cooler parts of the day into the night.Will be in thick cover during the hottest part of the day. Female herds, bachelor herds and family herds can be distinguished. Breeding
A single young is born at any time during the year after a gestation period of +-7 months. The new born stays hidden for up to 3 weeks and will remains with its mother until the birth of the next offspring.
