Average weight of male 70 kg (175 lbs.) and the female 58 kg (128 lbs.) Shoulder height averages at about 88 cm (35 in). Life expectancy is about 8 years.


Medium size antelope with yellowish grey-brown coat and black glandular patches below the base of the ears. The belly, around the lips, and the underside of the bushy tail are white.

Difference between male and female: Only the males have horns and are larger than the females.


Their habitat consist out of floodplains, grass plains, reed beds with open water and grassy rolling hills with enough water sources. Avoids thickets and woodlands and are water dependent. Needs to drink more than once on a warm day. Prefer to bed down in tall grass or reed beds during the heat of the day. They usually live in pairs although larger groups may be found. Reedbuck feeds during the early morning and late afternoon, sometimes into the night. Older males are very territorial and will occupy their territory with a single female preventing contact with rival males. When spooked, they will stand still for a while before taking off and stop several times to look back to see if the danger is gone.


A single young is born at any time of the year during a gestation period of about 8 months. The new born stays concealed for about 60 days with the female returning regularly for nursing.
