Average weight of male and female is about 10 kg (22 lbs.) with an average shoulder height of 54 cm (21 in). It has a life expectancy of +-8 years.
Identification
It has a rough, reddish-brown coat with white speckles. It has fairly large ears and a prominent scent gland below the front corner of the eyes. The inner legs, throat and face are without speckles.
Difference between male and female: Only the male has horns
Habits
It is restricted to a small strip along the south- western coast of South Africa. It’s main habitat includes the fynbos areas, dense shrubs alongside rivers, at the foot of mountains, rocky hills and broken country. Sufficient shelter is essential and one will sometimes found them near or in urban areas, close to human activity. They are almost completely independent of water, gaining most of the moisture they need from what they consume. Occur in pairs or single. Very weary animals and will go into hiding as soon as they suspect danger. Will hide until the last moment before taking off. They are both grazers and browsers. Mainly nocturnal ,but also active during early morning and late afternoon.
Breeding
A single young is born after a gestation period of +- 6 months. The offspring stay hidden and will only join the female after 2 months.
