Average weight of males is about 60 kg (132 lbs.) and females 50 kg (10 lbs.) Shoulder height averages at about 92 cm (37 in). Life expectancy is about 10 years.

Identification

The whole coat is white to yellowish-white in colour. It is also a colour phase and not an albino

Difference between male and female: The male is slightly larger than the female with thicker horns that are lighter in colour.

Habits

Blesbok can be found in open savannah, grassy veld and plains. They also like the Cape Fynbos that contains plenty of grass and shrubs for cover. Quite often they occupy relative small territories of about 5 acres in size. Although diurnal, they prefer to graze in the early mornings and late afternoons, resting during the heat of the day. During cooler weather they will be active for most part of the day. Will walk in a single file between drinking and feeding areas.When they walk or run , a dominant female will lead the herd. They form herds that consist out of several males and females with offspring as well as solitary males.

Breeding

The Blesbok is a seasonal breeder with peak births during September – December. A single calf is born after a gestation period of +-8 months.
