Average weight of male 200kg(440lbs) and female 170kg(376lbs). Shoulder height averages at about 106cm(40in). They have a life expectancy of about 20 years.


The lion is the second largest , living cat after the tiger. The male lion is easily recognised by its mane, getting darker when it grows older. Coloration varies from yellowish to dark brown with the tuft on the tail , dark brown to black. The lion is one of the most widely recognised animal symbols in the world. The male is much larger than the female and only the male has a mane.


They inhabit savannah, grassland, bush and semi-desert areas. The only cat species that are social and form prides that consist out of females with their offspring and a small number of adult males.Groups of females hunt together, mostly during the night. They will sleep for up to 60% of the day especially when it is warm. Most of the hunting is done by the females with the males protecting the pride and defending their territory. They are predatory carnivores and their diet includes anything from a mouse to a young elephant. Lions will kill other predators such as leopard, hyena, cheetah and wild dogs but seldom devour them afterwards.


One to four cubs are born after a gestation period of about 110 days. The female will leave the pride to give birth in a secluded area and will only introduce the cubs to the pride after six to eight weeks. Weaning occurs after six to seven months.
