Elephants are herbivores and can be found in different habitats including savannahs, forests, deserts and swamps. Shade, water and enough grass and branches are essential as food. They also enjoy leaves, bark, reeds and fruit. The elephant usesit’s ears to help control the temperature of its body by flapping them. Bulls form temporary male herds or live alone and will only interact with the cows during mating. Females spend their entire lives in family groups that are led by an old female, called the matriarch. She remains the leader of the group until her death or until she has not got the strength to fullfilher role anymore. Feeding takes place in the morning, afternoon and during the night. They will rest and sometimes doze in the shade during warm days but sleep at night while lying down.
