RED HARTEBEEST (CAPE HARTEBEEST)Average weight of male 155 kg (340 lbs.) and the female 120 kg (264 lbs.).
Average shoulder height 130 cm (52 in). Average life expectancy is about 16 years.

IDENTIFICATION: They have a long face with complex curving horns, joint at the base. Glossy, reddish-brown coat with the tail, blaze on the face and outside of legs , black in colour.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE: The males have thicker horns and larger body size

HABITS: They prefer open woodlands and grassy plains and areas close to water. They are independent of water, but will drink when available. Herds of up to several hundreds have been sighted in Botswana and Namibia.

Family groups, bachelor herds and solitary males occur. Family groups consist of a dominant male, young females and females with offspring. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoons. Will rest during the heat of the day.

BREEDING: A single calf is born after a gestation period of 8 months. After birth the calves are hidden in dense vegetation to increase their chance of survival against predators.
